For installing codecs, EasyUbuntu http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/ looks quite promising - it just needs to be bundled with the default install. Even the issues of getting Firefox installed are a show stopper for me. Not to mention those regarding the codecs, which if you hadn't mentioned, would have been the next thing I tried before giving up to wait until somebody gets this right in a distro.
